The latest kerfuffle to come out of President Trump’s Twitter feed occurred when the president, sick to death about Maryland Democrat Rep Elijah Cummings’ constant criticism of conditions at the southern border, let loose with the following pair of tweets.
“Rep, Elijah Cummings has been a brutal bully, shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous. His district is considered the Worst in the USA…”
The president concluded with, “… As proven last week during a Congressional tour, the Border is clean, efficient & well run, just very crowded. Cumming District is a disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place.”
The reaction coming from various Democratic officeholders and their enablers in the media was not unexpected but came with particular zeal. The president is a racist. The tweet was racist. Anyone, having seen the tweets, who still support President Trump is also a racist.
Then a nagging problem with this narrative started to arise. President Trump was telling the truth.
Three years ago, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, had visited Maryland, including Cummings’ district, while on his first run for the presidency. He opined that “Anyone who took the walk that we took around this neighborhood would not think you’re in a wealthy nation. You would think that you were in a Third World country.” He also suggested that residents of Baltimore had lifespans less than inhabitants of disease and famine ridden North Korea.”
Sanders was not accused of racism when he made those remarks. The fiery “Democratic socialist” was quick to call the president’s remarks as racist.
Trump ran into special acrimony for suggesting that Cummings’ district is rat-infested. CNN claimed that the president was using code words to refer to black and brown people. However, the irony of ironies, PBS aired a documentary in 2018 that showed that Baltimore is indeed infested with rats, some of them very large and very dangerous, and has been for decades.
The Baltimore Sun sniffed in an editorial that, “It is better to have a few rats than to be one.” The paper went on to accuse Trump of racism and of catering to white supremacists. Cummings, the Sun noted, is the son of sharecroppers. The president’s real reason for attacking Baltimore and Cummings is that the elderly congressman has been a thorn in the president’s side on immigration.
To be fair, a clear reading of Trump’s tweets would clearly agree with the Sun’s assessment. The problem is that the president is attempting to illustrate Cummings’ hypocrisy.
Perhaps mindful that he is being tagged as racist for attacking an African American congressman, Trump laid into Nancy Pelosi, the House Speaker as well.
“Speaking of failing badly, has anyone seen what is happening to Nancy Pelosi’s district in San Francisco. It is not even recognizable lately. Something must be done before it is too late. The Dems should stop wasting time on the Witch Hunt Hoax and start focusing on our Country!”
Pelosi’s district is well to do but has been recently been overrun by homeless people who litter the sidewalks, wallowing in their own body waste, and doing drugs. The City by the Bay has sidewalks that are covered with human excrement. Local government officials seem to be powerless to deal with the problem.
No racial controversy is complete without the intervention of the Reverend Al Sharpton. Sharpton announced his intention to visit Baltimore, for what purpose he did not say. However, the president had a pretty good idea what Sharpton is up to. He tweeted:
“I have known Al for 25 years. Went to fights with him & Don King, always got along well. He “loved Trump!” He would ask me for favors often. Al is a con man, a troublemaker, always looking for a score. Just doing his thing. Must have intimidated Comcast/NBC. Hates Whites & Cops!”
Reverend Al snarked back that he was indeed a “troublemaker” – for racists and bigots and that he intended to set about that work.
Elijah Cummings himself has not been available for comment. He is part of a delegation led by Speaker Pelosi embarked on a European junket.
About the time the Twitter firestorm had erupted, the congressman was dining at a swank Venetian restaurant called the Terrazza Danieli, just a few footsteps from the Piazza San Marco, where the price of the appetizers alone could be said, without too much exaggeration, to feed one of his constituents for a week.
