The adage that “The enemy of my enemy is my friend” sounds good on paper. But in real life, it’s often not true. Sometimes the enemy of your enemy is just another enemy. This is why the sudden fascination that many conservatives have with Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) is so baffling to those of us who have followed politics for a while.
What is it about Tulsi Gabbard that has so many Republicans cheering on her primary race for the 2020 Democrat nomination? Is it the all-white Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez jumpsuit that she wears? You know that’s an intentional visual image on the part of the Gabbard’s campaign, right? She wants Democrat primary voters to know that no matter what Gabbard says on the campaign trail, she’s down for the struggle on socialism, wink, wink.
In Hawaii, Tulsi Gabbard’s father started a political action committee years ago to advocate for pro-life policies and to fight for one-man, one-woman marriage in America. Tulsi worked for her dad’s PAC for many years.
In fact, that’s sort of how she eased her way into politics. But when Gabbard started to rise through the ranks in the Democrat Party, she denounced and betrayed her own father and his life’s work. Or, as the mainstream media likes to call it whenever a Democrat shows their true colors by stabbing loved ones in the back and betraying positions they’ve publicly held for their entire life, Tulsi “evolved” on those issues.
Aside from occasionally sounding similar to President Trump on the issue of the Syrian-Turkish war, Tulsi Gabbard’s policy positions are indistinguishable from the rest of the Democrats running for the 2020 nomination. She supports the insane “Medicare for All” plan, which recent non-partisan studies have shown could engulf the entire US economy before any other federal spending had taken place.
Gabbard supports banning firearms and confiscating guns from law-abiding Americans through “red flag” laws. She has an ‘F’ rating from the NRA, a 0% rating from the Hawaii Rifle Association and a 100% favorable rating from the Brady gun-grabbing organization. Gabbard also has a 100% favorable rating from Planned Parenthood. A Tulsi Gabbard administration would ensure that both you and the unborn have no inherent protections for life.
Gabbard has voted to prevent the deportation of illegal aliens who were arrested for violent crimes on US soil, including child rapists and drunk drivers. She supports ending all caps (limits) on immigration and having an open border between America and Mexico. She’s voted multiple times in favor of protecting Obama’s illegal alien “dreamers” from deportation.
Looking at her voting record, how is Tulsi Gabbard any different than Kamala Harris, Beto O’Rourke or Corey Booker? The answer is, she’s not.
And as for Gabbard’s nebulous positions on Syria, she’s been one of the biggest flip-floppers in the 2020 race. In September 2018, Tulsi Gabbard called for a massive insertion of more American troops into Syria. Syrian government forces were planning a massive assault to take the town of Idlib back from Al Qaeda.
Military genius Tulsi Gabbard demanded that President Trump insert tens of thousands of American soldiers into Syria to create a “safe corridor” for civilians in Idlib to escape before Al Qaeda and Syria duked it out. From a military perspective, this plan was literally insane and would have cost untold numbers of American lives. And it wasn’t even Gabbard’s plan; she stole the idea from the UN.
A few months later, when all the polling showed that most Americans wildly approve of President Trump’s plans to pull US troops completely out of Syria, Gabbard’s position on Syria changed again. Suddenly, she wanted to bring her “brothers and sisters” in the military home from Syria and was attacking Donald Trump for not doing so quickly enough.
She was tired of the military being the world’s police force. Curiously, she didn’t refer to military members as her “brothers and sisters” when she was demanding that Trump send them to die in a world police action for Idlib.
Now that Trump has pulled the troops out of Syria and successfully negotiated a cease-fire between Turkey, the Kurds, and Syria, Gabbard has been forced to edit her campaign website once again. Now she wants to “end the war in Syria.”
While I don’t understand the Republican fascination with Tulsi Gabbard, I do have one positive thing to say about her. She’s very adept at moving the goalposts when she thinks it will advance her career.
