Republicans Won’t Punish Romney
(UnitedVoice.com) – On Wednesday, President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial came to a close and to nobody’s surprise — he was acquitted. Senate Republicans were headed for a unanimous vote — and then Mitt Romney happened. Luckily for him, his GOP colleagues said they’re not going to punish him.
Romney voted with Democrats to convict Trump on the single abuse of power charge. In a speech before the vote, he said the president was “guilty of an appalling abuse of public trust.”
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told reporters that he wasn’t happy about the decision but said Romney’s supported “most everything” the party has done. He assured the press that there aren’t any doghouses there. Other Republicans agreed with McConnell and dismissed any notion that the Utah senator would be forced out of the party.
Party officials may be standing by him, but the general public might not be so forgiving. It’ll be interesting to see how Romney rides out this storm.
